From Cafe tables to Tennis tables – our next Community Zoom

Our next Queens Park Community Zoom takes place on Wednesday July 15th at 6.30pm

Since the last meeting, more activity has returned to our streets with the shops opening and people getting out and about, and it has been good to see trading activity along St James Street, although some residents been concerned about the impact on social distancing of more people and of restaurants trading on the street.

Thinking to the future, however, we are pleased to be welcoming the Brighton Table Tennis Club to the next meeting who will be sharing proposals to improve their site for the community, with a new ‘pay what you can’ cafe and also work with the Hampshire Court residents to see how the green space can be improved as a community garden

Here is the full agenda for the meeting. The minutes from the last meeting can be found HERE and the Zoom joining link is below.

  1. Police update
  2. St James Street Social Distance Measures – issues and concerns
  3. Covid Emergency Funding street changes survey – local leaflet drop
  4. Table Tennis Club/parish hall proposals
  5. The future for this group – what should it do and how should it do it?
  6. Ward councillor update
  7. AOB
  8. Next meeting

Zooming June + Agenda (updated)

At our previous Queens Park Community Zoom catchups people have talked about the need for changes to our street layout to support social distancing – especially in the St James Street area, with requests made to move bins and close parking spaces to give people more room to queue and to walk, and it look like this call has been taken up, with extensive work taking place outside Morrison’s and Boots as well as elsewhere in the city centre

What do you think of it? Is it too much, about right or is there more to be done? With many of our shops set to open next week, how will the extra pedestrian space affect trade?

The council is putting these changes in place using emergency money from the Government – the first stage is about putting measures in place quickly, and there is an opportunity for further funding to help make successful schemes permanent, so how well this works could have an impact on the city felt far beyond the current pandemic.

This will be among the topics discussed at our next Queens Park Community Zoom, which takes place on Wednesday June 17th 6.30pm. Other items will include a policing update and we hope that someone from the homeless and street community support services will be able to attend to update us on this area as well.

Social Streets and Antisocial Acts

At our Queens Park Community Zoom last week, our streets and how we use them dominated the discussion.

The meeting was attended by Sgt Mark Redbourn of the Brighton Prevent Team, who heard residents concerns about the levels of drug dealing and misuse, street drinking and begging taking place – despite the lockdown rules – and requests for more policing in the area. (Full minutes of the meeting can be found HERE)

Since the meeting, Mark has provided the email contacts for our local Community Officers as requested, and they can be found on the Community Support Contacts page.

As well as negative use of our streets, the meeting talked about possible changes to help with social distancing. The Government has provided new guidance for local authorities to take emergency action to increase space for pedestrians and cyclists, and some work has taken place – most locally on Madeira Drive which has been closed to motor traffic. People were particularly concerned about the near impossibility of social distancing around Morrisons because of street clutter.

Suggestions made have included;

  • Removing or relocating the various refuse bins outside Morrisons
  • Suspending some parking bays on St James Street to support social distance queuing or for relocated refuse bins
  • Pedestrianisation of the western end of St James Street
  • Closure to traffic of St James Street each evening to allow restaurants to place tables in the street and use the extra space to support social distance trading for the duration of the pandemic.

What do you think?

Our next Queens Park Community Zoom takes place on Wednesday. Come by and share your thoughts and ideas, raise concerns with your Councillors, local police and council community support team.

If you have any items you would like to see discussed, contact simon.bannister@brighton-hove.gov.uk for inclusion on the agenda
